How big a water tank does your home need?

A typical household of 4–6 people is well served by a 2,000–5,000 litre tank. Larger families, or homes that rely on rainwater harvesting, often choose 10,000 litres or more.

Think about how often your supply is interrupted and how many days you want to be covered. If water cuts are frequent, go a size up.

What to check before buying a plastic water tank

Before you buy, check that the tank is:

  • UV-stabilised, so it holds up in the Kenyan sun
  • Food-grade, so it is safe for drinking water
  • KEBS-certified
  • Fitted with a strong lid and good outlet fittings

Also plan for a level, firm base. An uneven base puts stress on the tank.

How long does a water tank last?

A quality rotomoulded tank can last 15 years or more.

Replace it if you see cracks, bulging, or leaks that keep coming back. Keeping the lid closed and the base level helps it last.
